PREMODIFIERS<\/h2>\n

Typically, a noun phrase consists of a noun or a pronoun while noun phrases also include:<\/p>\n

Determiners\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 These<\/u><\/strong> shoes<\/strong> are very colorful.<\/p>\n

Quantifiers\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She\u2019s worked in many<\/u> companies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Numbers\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The company has about a hundred<\/u> subsidiaries<\/strong> across the world.<\/p>\n

Adjectives\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She is one of my oldest<\/u> friends<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

These parts are called premodifiers as they are placed before the noun.<\/p>\n

Premodifiers are used in this order:<\/p>\n

determiners and quantifiers > numbers > adjectives + NOUNS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Postmodifiers<\/h2>\n

Postmodifiers are the parts found after the noun.<\/p>\n

Postmodifiers can be prepositional and -ing phrases, relative and that clauses, or to infinitives.<\/p>\n

    \n
  • prepositional phrases:<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    a company with a social corporate responsibility programs<\/strong>
    \nthat girl in that pink floral dress<\/strong>
    \nthe building at the end of the block<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    • \u2013ing phrases :<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      the clothes hanging over there<\/strong>
      \nthe employee having a meeting with the client<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
      • relative clauses :<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        the project she worked on for a year<\/strong>
        \nthe closet that my father assembled<\/strong>
        \nthe manager who proposed this initiative<\/strong>
        \nan twenty-year-old lad\u00a0who came by this morning\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \n
        • that clauses. This is commonly placed after nouns such as idea, fact, belief, suggestion:<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          They’re still not satisfied with their record, in spite of the fact<\/span> that they won the competition<\/strong>.
          \nCarla got the impression<\/span> that her new team didn’t support her<\/strong>.
          \nThere was a suggestion<\/span> that the public library should be renovated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

            \n
          • to infinitives :<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            She’s got no conferences\u00a0to attend<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

             <\/p>\n

            These infinitive postmodifiers are common after indefinite pronouns and adverbs:<\/p>\n

            We should think of something<\/span> to do<\/strong>.
            \nThey have nowhere<\/span> to go<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

            It is also possible to have more than one postmodifier:<\/p>\n

            a fifty-year old CEO with a degree which he received from Harvard<\/strong>
            \nthose students on the field playing football<\/strong><\/p>\n
