(because I didn&#8217;t buy him a present for his birthday)<\/p>\n<p>present wish: wish + past simple<\/p>\n<p>I wish I were wealthier. (because I am not wealthy)<br \/>\nI wish I knew how to explain this to you. (because I don&#8217;t know how to explain this to you)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0to express irritation with other people<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>wish + would + bare infinitive<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I wish you would listen to me more.<br \/>\nThey wish she would be more careful with her words.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compare<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>present wish:<br \/>\nI wish you would listen to me more.<br \/>\n(I think you can, but you don&#8217;t, so please do.)<\/p>\n<p>past wish:<br \/>\nI wish you listened to me more.<br \/>\n(You don&#8217;t and I don\u2019t think you ever will.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: A first-person &#8216;I&#8217; isn&#8217;t normally used in this form of wish because we can control our actions, so saying &#8220;I wish I would stop procrastinating.&#8221; means I want to stop procrastinating, and I think I can, so why don\u2019t I?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, when it comes to an illness or addiction, saying &#8220;I wish I would stop binge-watching series.&#8221; means &#8216;I don\u2019t want to watch anymore, but I can\u2019t stop because I\u2019m hooked.&#8217;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0to send good wishes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>wish + object 1 (pronoun) + object 2 (noun)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We wish you safe travels.<br \/>\nI wish you all the best.<br \/>\nI wish you luck with your married life.<\/p>\n<h2>\n<strong>HOPE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0to wish for the future<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I hope you will talk to your mother about this.<br \/>\nShe hopes to be married before she turns 40.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0to signal future intentions<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I was hoping to get him something for his birthday and would have done so, if I hadn&#8217;t gotten sick last weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Normally, hope isn&#8217;t followed with &#8216;that&#8217; unless there is another subject.<\/p>\n<p>Her parents hoped (that) Haley would learn how to play the cello, but she had always wanted to play the violin.<br \/>\nI hope (that) you won&#8217;t find this offensive, but this soup is a little bland.<br \/>\nThey were running late for their flight and hoped (that) traffic would not be that bad on their way to the airport.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WISH \u00a0to wish a situation in the present or past is not real, knowing it can\u2019t change because it\u2019s impossible past wish: wish + past perfect I wish I had bought him a present for his birthday.
