The Johnsons have<\/strong> their garden maintained<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means that the Johnsons arranged for the gardener to maintain their garden. They don\u2019t maintain it themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have\/get something done<\/em><\/strong> is used to express that the subject arranged for somebody else to do something for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The form is: has\/have\/had + object + past participle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

COMPARE:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marta cut<\/strong> her hair. vs Marta had her hair cut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(She cut it herself.)      (Someone cut Marta\u2019s hair for her.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jenny replaced<\/strong> the broken window. vs Jenny had the broken window replaced<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(She replaced the broken window on her own.)\t\t(Someone replaced the broken window for her.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you do<\/strong> your nails yourself? vs Did you have your nails done<\/strong>?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Did you paint your nails yourself?) \t(Did someone paint your nails?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Get something done<\/em><\/strong> can also be used in place of have something done <\/em><\/strong>especially in informal spoken English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When are you going to get your passport renewed<\/strong>?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You need to get your computer fixed <\/strong>as soon as possible.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Holmes needs to get that lump on her head checked<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in some cases, have <\/strong>or get something done <\/strong>has a different meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Smith had\/got his medical license revoked<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this situation, Dr. Smith didn\u2019t arrange for someone to revoke his medical license. Here it means his medical license was revoked by the medical authorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When this is what you mean by have\/get something done<\/em><\/strong>, it usually connotes something negative that happens to someone or things that belong to them.
