Comparative adjectives are used to compare differences between the two objects they modify. They are used in sentences where two nouns are compared, in this pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background has-text-align-center has-primary-color has-accent-background-color\"><strong>Noun (subject) + verb + comparative adjective + than + noun (object).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We use &#8220;than&#8221; when we want to compare one thing with another.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>He is three years younger <strong>than<\/strong> me.<br>She is a better dancer <strong>than<\/strong> Mary.<br>Russia is a bigger country <strong>than<\/strong> France.<br>(The second item of comparison can be omitted if it is clear from the context.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We use comparative adjectives to show change or make comparisons.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>This car is <strong>better<\/strong>, but it&#8217;s much more expensive.<br>I&#8217;m feeling <strong>better<\/strong> now.<br>We need a <strong>bigger<\/strong> car.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two ways to form a comparative adjective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Short Adjectives<\/strong> <strong>Comparative<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For 1-syllable adjectives, simply add -er.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>tall \u2192 taller<\/p><p>Mary is taller than Jenny.<br>fast \u2192 faster<\/p><p>I run faster than you.<br>old \u2192 older<\/p><p>My grandpa is older than my grandma.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>2-syllable adjectives ending in -y, change the y to &#8220;i&#8221;.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>lucky \u2192 luckier<\/p><p>My friend is <strong>luckier<\/strong> than me in the lottery.<br>tidy \u2192 tidier<\/p><p>I hope they make the community a <strong>tidier<\/strong> place to live in.<br>happy \u2192 happier<br><br>I am <strong>happier<\/strong> when I&#8217;m with you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If the adjective ends in -e, just add -r<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>late \u2192 later<br>large \u2192 larger<br>strange \u2192 stranger<br>wise \u2192 wiser<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I arrived at school <strong>later<\/strong> today than yesterday.<br>My bag is <strong>larger<\/strong> than yours.<br>My dream tonight is <strong>stranger<\/strong> than my dream last night.<br>I am <strong>wiser<\/strong> now.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If the adjective ends in consonant, vowel, consonant, double the last consonant.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>big \u2192 bigger<\/p><p>I gained weight so I wear <strong>bigger<\/strong> shirts now.<br>fat \u2192 fatter<br>My cat is <strong>fatter<\/strong> than your cat.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Long Adjectives<\/strong> <strong>Comparative<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For 2-syllable adjectives, simply add &#8220;more&#8221; before the positive adjective.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>modern \u2192 more modern<br>I like the second house. It&#8217;s <strong>more modern<\/strong> than the other one.<\/p><p>pleasant \u2192 more pleasant<br>The weather is <strong>more pleasant<\/strong> today than yesterday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For all adjectives of 3 or more syllables, also add <strong>more<\/strong> before the positive adjective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>expensive \u2192 more expensive<\/p><p>The yellow car is <strong>more expensive<\/strong> than the green one.<br>intelligent \u2192 more intelligent<br>He is <strong>more intelligent<\/strong> than his brother.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following adjectives are exception to the previously mentioned rules because they have irregular forms.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>good \u2192 better<br>That cake tastes good. \u2192 This cake tastes <strong>better<\/strong>.<\/p><p>bad \u2192 worse<\/p><p>The weather today is bad. \u2192 The weather today is <strong>worse<\/strong> than yesterday.<\/p><p>far \u2192 farther\/further<br>His house is far. \u2192 Her house is <strong>farther<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Level: Beginner-Intermediate We use comparative adjectives to show change or make comparisons.
