Level: Beginner-Intermediate<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concrete nouns are simply those nouns that can be experienced physically. Nouns are people, places, and things. Most nouns are concrete nouns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s easy to know if something is a concrete noun because you experience it through one of your five senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch<\/strong>. If you cannot see, hear, taste, touch, or smell the person or thing, it is not a concrete noun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the sentence: “Can you answer the phone ?”<\/strong> the noun phone<\/strong> is a concrete noun: you can touch it, see it, hear it, and maybe even smell it or taste it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the sentence: \u201cWhat is that sound?\u201d<\/strong>
Even though sound<\/strong> can\u2019t be touched\u2014and the sound may even be coming from several places\u2014you can hear the sound, so it\u2019s a concrete noun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are other examples of concrete nouns and sentences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sight<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

cat – The cat is purring.<\/p>

Eric – Eric is my classmate.<\/p>

bag – This red bag is mine.<\/p>

water – Please give me that glass of water.<\/p>

group – This is a big group of students.<\/p>

vegetable – I don’t like vegetables.<\/p>

man – I saw the man on the street.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Hearing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

shout – I heard his shout.<\/p>

Fly Me to the Moon – I like the song Fly Me to the Moon.<\/p>

bark – The dog’s bark is so loud.<\/p>

music – I like the music.<\/p>

whisper – I can’t hear her whisper.<\/p>

noise – The noise is too loud.<\/p>

sound – I don’t like that sound.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Taste<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

fried chicken – I love eating fried chicken.<\/p>

Cadbury Chocolate – My favorite chocolate is Cadbury Chocolate.<\/p>

cupcake – Can I have a cupcake?<\/p>

medicine – Did you buy the medicine?<\/p>

beer – I like the taste of beer.<\/p>

ice cream – I like eating ice cream in summer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Smell<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

flower – You smell like a flower.<\/p>

Prima Ketchup – I prefer Prima Ketchup than others.<\/p>

perfume – I like the smell of your perfume.<\/p>

horse – This room smells like a horse.<\/p>

aromas – I enjoyed the aromas in the restaurant.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Touch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

skin – Your skin is so soft.<\/p>

Merino wool – Merino wool has really good quality.<\/p>

pennies – Give me some pennies, please.<\/p>

baggage – The baggage is so heavy.<\/p>

chair – This chair seems sturdy.<\/p>
