Sometimes we use a noun to describe another noun. We can use a noun as an adjective when it follows a noun that it modifies. In that case, the first noun &#8220;acts as&#8221; an adjective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We write the &#8220;noun as adjective&#8221; and the real noun in several ways.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>two separate words<\/strong> (bathroom door)<br><strong>two hyphenated words<\/strong> (head-master)<br><strong>one word<\/strong> (bedroom)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The &#8220;noun as adjective&#8221; always comes first.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>a <strong>race car<\/strong> is a car that you use in racing<br>a <strong>horse race<\/strong> is a race for horses<br>a <strong>car race<\/strong> is a race for cars<br>a <strong>love story<\/strong> is a story about love<br>a <strong>ping-pong ball<\/strong> is a ball for playing ping-pong<br><strong>tennis shoes<\/strong> are shoes for playing tennis<br>an <strong>art exhibition<\/strong> is an exhibition of arts<br>a <strong>book shop<\/strong> is a shop that sells books<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The &#8220;noun as adjective&#8221; is singular. Just like a real adjective, the &#8220;noun as adjective&#8221; is never changing. It is usually in the singular form.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>car race &#8211; car races<\/strong><br>(NOT cars race, cars races)<br><strong>footballer &#8211; footballers<\/strong><br>(NOT feetballer, feetballers)<br><strong>shoe cabinet &#8211; shoe cabinets<\/strong><br>(NOT shoes cabinet, shoes cabinets)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Some nouns look plural but we normally treat them as singular. When we use these nouns &#8220;as adjectives&#8221; they stay the same.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>News<\/strong>:<br>a news reporter, two news reporters<br><strong>Billiards<\/strong>:<br>one billiards table, two billiards tables<br><strong>Athletics<\/strong>:<br>an athletics coach, two athletics coach<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>When we use certain nouns &#8220;as adjectives&#8221; (clothes, sports, customs, accounts, arms), we use them in the plural form.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>sports<\/strong> team &#8211; sports teams<br><strong>customs<\/strong> officer &#8211; customs officers<br><strong>clothes<\/strong> shop &#8211; clothes shops<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Just like adjectives, we can also use more than one &#8220;noun as adjective&#8221; together.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><br><strong>machine production costs<\/strong>: we are talking about the costs of producing machines<br><strong>Spain football team coach<\/strong>: we are talking about the coach who trains the team that plays football for Spain<br><strong>animal research center<\/strong>: we are talking about a center that researches into animals<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Level: Beginner-Intermediate A noun is a person, place or thing, and an adjective is a word that describes a noun.
