{"id":19632,"date":"2021-09-18T15:53:01","date_gmt":"2021-09-18T13:53:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phoneenglish.es\/blog\/?p=19632"},"modified":"2022-06-03T06:06:24","modified_gmt":"2022-06-03T04:06:24","slug":"imperatives-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/phoneenglish.es\/blog\/2021\/09\/imperatives-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Imperatives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Imperatives tell people <strong>what to do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>root form of the verb<\/strong> alone can sometimes create imperative sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><em>&#8220;Stop!&#8221;<br>&#8220;Shoot!&#8221;<br>&#8220;Fire!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make the imperative, use the <strong>root form of the verb.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><em>&#8220;<strong>Stay <\/strong>right there!&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>Take<\/strong> out the trash.&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>Pass<\/strong> me the salt, please.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Negative imperative<\/strong> simply adds <em>&#8220;do not&#8221;<\/em> before the verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><em>&#8220;<strong>Don&#8217;t <\/strong>go there.&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>Don&#8217;t<\/strong> jump!&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>Don&#8217;t <\/strong>stay up late.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the <strong>speaker<\/strong> is included in the imperative, you can use <em>&#8220;let&#8217;s&#8221;<\/em> or <em>&#8220;let us&#8221;<\/em> before the verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><em>&#8220;<strong>Let&#8217;s <\/strong>dance.&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>Let&#8217;s<\/strong> go now.&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>Let us<\/strong> do it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Determining Imperative Sentences<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most imperative sentences end with a<strong> period<\/strong> or an <strong>exclamation mark<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, <strong>command\/imperative verbs<\/strong> are at the <strong>start of the sentences<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><em>&#8220;<strong>Take<\/strong> care!&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>Be<\/strong> brave.&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>Listen <\/strong>to me.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imperative sentences generally <strong>do not have a grammatical subject<\/strong> because it always take the second person (you) for the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Imperatives are used for many different reasons.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>To give orders or commands.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><em>&#8220;Get out!&#8221;<br>&#8220;Stay where you are.&#8221;<br>&#8220;Do not make a sound.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li><strong>To give warnings or instructions.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br>&#8220;<em>Watch out!&#8221;<br>&#8220;Keep going straight.&#8221;<br>&#8220;Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><li><strong>To give advice.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<br><\/strong><em>&#8220;You don&#8217;t look well. Go see a doctor.&#8221;<br>&#8220;Make sure to settle your bills on time.&#8221;<br>&#8220;Don&#8217;t worry about her.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\"><li><strong>Making a request or wish.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br>&#8220;<em>Please wait outside.&#8221;<br>&#8220;Please follow the rules.&#8221;<br>&#8220;Have fun at the party!<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Special Cases of Imperative<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With<strong> &#8220;do&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We add <em>&#8220;do&#8221;<\/em> <strong>before the imperative <\/strong>to make the sentence more polite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><em>&#8220;<strong>Do <\/strong>make yourself at home.&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>Do<\/strong> understand the situation.&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>Do<\/strong> let go.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <strong>never, ever, always<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like &#8220;do&#8221;, the words<em> never, ever and always<\/em> come <strong>before imperatives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;<strong>Never<\/strong> do that again.&#8221;<br>&#8220;Don&#8217;t <strong>ever <\/strong>talk back to your parents.&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>Always<\/strong> remember that.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Imperative with subject<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes imperative clearly includes the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><br><em>&#8220;<strong>Somebody <\/strong>answer the door!&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>You<\/strong> stay out of it!&#8221;<br>&#8220;<strong>Everybody<\/strong> run!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imperatives tell people what to do.
