These past actions do not take place anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sentence construction usually starts with a <strong><em>subject<\/em><\/strong> followed by <em>would <\/em>and then the <em>base form of the verb<\/em>. Consequently, for the negative we use the same formula but we replace <em>would<\/em> with <em>would not<\/em> or the shorter form <em>wouldn&#8217;t<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Subject + would\/wouldn&#8217;t + base form of the verb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every weekend, I <em>would <\/em>go hiking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we were young, our parents <em>would <\/em>take us to the park every Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My teacher <em>would <\/em>give me after-school exercises everyday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On rainy days, we <em>wouldn&#8217;t<\/em> go out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was a child, my father <em>wouldn&#8217;t<\/em> give me the time of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My next-door neighbor <em>wouldn&#8217;t<\/em> bat an eye whenever he heard noises from my apartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Would <\/strong>can also be used with <strong>always, often, constantly<\/strong> etc. when talking about repeated past actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a teenager, I <em>would<\/em> <em>always<\/em> sneak out of our house at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I<em> would constantly<\/em> correct my colleagues and they didn&#8217;t like it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in college, I<em> would often <\/em>go to concerts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In English, if an action <strong>only happened once<\/strong>, we <strong>do not <\/strong>use would + base form of the verb.
