En ingl\u00e9s, si deseamos decir que algo existe o no existe en alg\u00fan lugar o en alg\u00fan momento, a menudo se utiliza “there + be<\/em>“. <\/strong> Normalmente se usa para hablar de algo por primera vez en una conversaci\u00f3n. A continuaci\u00f3n te explicamos las caracter\u00edsticas de there is, there are<\/em> para que los uses de forma correcta y sin confundirlos.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Como hemos mencionado, el uso de\u00a0 there is – there are <\/em>en ingl\u00e9s\u00a0 es fundamentalmente para expresar la existencia de algo,<\/strong> tal y como lo hacemos nosotros en la cotidianidad a trav\u00e9s del espa\u00f1ol con el verbo \u201chaber\u201d. Te dejamos algunos ejemplos para que vayas analizando el uso de cada uno:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is <\/em><\/strong>a book on the table.<\/em> \/  Hay un libro en la mesa.<\/p>

There are<\/em><\/strong> two restaurants in my town. <\/em>\/  Hay dos restaurantes en mi ciudad. <\/p>

Is there<\/em><\/strong> a bus station near here?<\/em> \/ \u00bfHay una estaci\u00f3n de autobuses cerca de aqu\u00ed?<\/p>

Are there<\/em><\/strong> any apples left?<\/em> \/ \u00bfQuedan manzanas?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Si te fijas bien en los ejemplos, hay una diferencia simple:<\/strong> there is<\/em> se usa cuando nos vamos a referir de una cosa (singular) y there are<\/em> para varias cosas (plural).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is<\/em> y su contracci\u00f3n there ‘s <\/em>son t\u00e9rminos singulares. Usamos la contracci\u00f3n <\/strong>there’s <\/em><\/strong>m\u00e1s com\u00fanmente en el habla informal:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is <\/em><\/strong>a new coffee shop in the corner. <\/em>\/ Hay una nueva cafeter\u00eda en la esquina.<\/p>

He\u2019s very strict, and <\/em>there\u2019s<\/em><\/strong> no chance he will change his mind. (speaking)<\/em> \/ Es muy estricto y no hay posibilidad de que cambie de opini\u00f3n. (Forma oral).\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

La forma negativa de there is<\/em><\/strong> es<\/strong> isn\u2019t:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There<\/em> isn’t<\/em><\/strong> any milk in the fridge. <\/em>\/ No hay leche en la nevera.<\/p>

There <\/em>isn’t <\/em><\/strong>a cup on the table<\/em>. \/ No hay una taza en la mesa.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

There is<\/em> puede ser usado en todos los tiempos verbales de be<\/em>, te dejamos a continuaci\u00f3n una tabla comparativa para que analices su estructura en presente, pasado y futuro:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is there<\/em><\/strong> a reason why you’re upset?<\/em> \/ \u00bfHay alguna raz\u00f3n por la que est\u00e1s molesto<\/td>Was there<\/em><\/strong> a reason why you were upset yesterday?<\/em> \/ \u00bfHubo alguna raz\u00f3n por la que estabas molesto ayer?<\/td>Will there be<\/em><\/strong> a chance that you will feel upset?<\/em> \/ \u00bfHabr\u00e1 una posibilidad de que te sientas molesto?<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Si deseas, tambi\u00e9n puedes usar <\/strong>there is<\/em><\/strong> en presente perfecto:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There has been <\/em><\/strong>a problem at the supermarket.<\/em> \/ Ha habido un problema en el supermercado.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Otra cosa importantes que debes saber es que en futuro (will be)<\/em> se utiliza tanto con  nombres contables como incontables sin que su forma var\u00ede y la forma negativa de will<\/em>, es won\u2019t<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There <\/em>won’t<\/em><\/strong> be any disruptions.<\/em> \/ No habr\u00e1 interrupciones<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

There are<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are<\/em><\/strong> lo usamos con plurales a diferencia de <\/strong>there is. <\/em><\/strong>Tienes que considerar que al hablar y en algunos escritos informales, los nativos del ingl\u00e9s usan there’s<\/em> incluso cuando se refiere a m\u00e1s de uno. Este uso podr\u00eda considerarse incorrecto en la escritura formal o en un examen, pero existe la posibilidad de que escuches a alguien us\u00e1ndolo de esa manera, como por ejemplo:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s<\/em><\/strong> lots of apples there.<\/em> \/ Hay muchas manzanas ah\u00ed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Lo gramaticalmente correcto ser\u00eda:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are<\/em><\/strong> a lot of apples there.<\/em> \/ Hay muchas manzanas all\u00ed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Al igual que there is<\/em>, puedes usar there are en todos los tiempos de be, veamos la tabla: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There aren’t<\/strong> any sweets left. \/ No quedan dulces.<\/td>There weren’t<\/em><\/strong> any sweets left.<\/em> \/ No quedaban dulces.<\/td>There aren’t <\/em><\/strong>going to be any sweets left.<\/em> \/ No van a quedar dulces.<\/td><\/tr>
Are there <\/em><\/strong>any more sandwiches?<\/em> \/ \u00bfHay m\u00e1s bocadillos?<\/td>Were there<\/strong> any sandwiches?<\/em> \/ \u00bfHubo bocadillos?<\/td>Will there<\/em><\/strong> be any sandwiches?<\/em> \/ \u00bfHabr\u00e1 bocadillos?<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

En presente perfecto <\/strong>la estructura correcta ser\u00eda la siguiente:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There have been<\/em><\/strong> a lot of problems with robots lately.<\/em> \/ Ha habido muchos problemas con los robots <\/em>\u00faltimamente.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Usualmente usamos “there + be”<\/em> con<\/strong> a \/ an \/ some \/ any \/ no \/ much \/ many \/ a lot of <\/strong><\/em> y otras palabras indefinidas. No solemos usarlo con “the”<\/strong><\/em> o nombres propios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a1Cuidado! \/ Watch out! <\/em><\/strong>Aunque there is, there are<\/em> se traduzcan en espa\u00f1ol como “hay \/ haber”, no pueden utilizarse para expresar una obligaci\u00f3n como por ejemplo \u201chay que hacer la tarea\u201d. Para eso debes usar los modales must y have to.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
