Should have<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Should have<\/strong> can be used to show something that you regret doing or not doing.<\/strong> It means that something did not happen but you wished it had happened.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I should have<\/em> left home early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    (I left home late and missed the bus. Now I wish that the past was different.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    He should have<\/em> practiced more for the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    (He did not practice enough and lost the game.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. \u00a0Another use of should have is to talk about something you expected to happen but didn’t happen or only happened later on.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The package should have<\/em> arrived today, but I haven’t heard from the courier yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      ( I was expecting a package, but it is not here.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I am having a late lunch. It should have<\/em> been prepared hours ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      (The food was prepared late. It has just been served.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The negative form<\/strong> of “should have<\/em>” is “should not have<\/strong><\/em>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Use:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Might have<\/strong> shows an opinion about a past situation<\/strong>. We believe that the action possibly happened, but we don’t know for sure.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        He might have<\/em> left the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        (It is possible that he has left the office, but it is also possible he has stayed at the office.)    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        She might have <\/em>told him the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        (It is possible that she has told him the truth, but it is also possible that she has told him something else.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The negative form<\/strong> of “might have<\/em>” is “might not have<\/strong><\/em>“. The contracted form<\/strong> is “mightn’t have<\/strong><\/em>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
