They can be written or spelled as two separate words (<strong>open compound<\/strong>), joined words forming a single word, or two words joined together by a hyphen <em>(<\/em><strong>hyphenated compounds<\/strong><em>)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are irregularities in compounding that even authorities are not always in agreement in all cases of compounding words. The following examples of the use of hyphen, however, are generally accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong>Use a hyphen if the<strong> two or more words <\/strong>are <em>functioning together<\/em> as a <em>single adjective before the noun.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>load-bearing<\/em> concrete<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>sugar-coated<\/em> doughnuts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a <em>well-written<\/em> article<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Omit the hyphen if the<strong> noun comes before<\/strong> the&nbsp; <em>compound modifiers<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>doughnuts <\/strong>were <em>sugar coated<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>article<\/strong> was <em>well written<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Use a hyphen with <strong>compound numbers<\/strong>. When spelled out, numbers between<em> twenty-one<\/em> and <em>ninety-nine<\/em> must be <strong>hyphenated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>fifty-eight<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>seventy-three<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The well-respected businessman turned <em>sixty-nine <\/em>this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. <\/strong>Use a hyphen to steer clear of any<strong> confusion<\/strong> or an <strong>awkward looking string of letters.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The message was <em>re-sent<\/em>. (I resent doing that chores.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The servants <em>re-lay<\/em> the carpet. ( The assistant will relay your message to the CEO.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am not a fan of the<em> anti-intellectual<\/em> culture in sports. (instead of antiintelectual)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong>Use hyphen with some <strong>prefixes<\/strong> such as <strong>ex-<\/strong> meaning former, <strong>self-<\/strong>, <strong>all-<\/strong>; with <strong>-elect<\/strong> as a<strong> suffix<\/strong>; to <strong>connect a prefix with a capitalized noun<\/strong>; and with <strong>figures<\/strong> or<strong> letters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>ex-convict&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>self-control<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>mid-August<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>all-consuming<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>president-elect<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>ex-Soviet leader<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>U-turn<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>mid-1940s<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> Use hyphen in <strong>line breaks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>a.<\/strong> When there is not enough space, use hyphen <strong>at the end of a line if necessary<\/strong>. This is to indicate that a long word has been broken off. Divide the word between syllables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> <strong>Do not divide one-syllable words.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Correct:<\/strong>       <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>It is imperative that we strictly follow all the necessary <em>recom-<\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>mended procedures.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Incorrect<\/strong>:        <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>They committed a huge mistake by underestimating the final <em>co-<\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>st of the project.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>b. <\/strong>Always <strong>divide<\/strong> a hyphenated compound word <strong>only at the hyphen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Correct:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;             The preparation for the inauguration of the <em>president-<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>elect started in the wee hours of the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Incorrect:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;            The preparation for the inauguration of the <em>pres-<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ident-elect started in the wee hours of the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>c.<\/strong> To break words <strong>ending <\/strong>in<strong> -ing<\/strong>, if a single final consonant in the root word is doubled before the suffix, use hyphen to separate the consonants; if not, hyphenate at the suffix itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>drop-ping&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>hop-ping<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>learn-ing<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>spill-ing<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>d. Do not<\/strong> separate a word <strong>between syllables<\/strong> if only one letter remains or if only two-letter suffixed begin a line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>simply<\/em> (Do not break this word in a way which leaves <em>ly <\/em>at the beginning of a new line.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>in-sin-u-ate<\/em> ( Divide only on either side of the<strong><em> u<\/em><\/strong>; do not leave the first letter <em>i- <\/em>at the end of a line.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are different ways to write compound words.
