An introductory phrase<\/strong> may be used before a question. When you need to use them, you must change the order of the word<\/strong> in the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Common introductions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you know…? <\/td><\/tr>
Can I ask…? <\/td><\/tr>
I’m not sure\u2026<\/td><\/tr>
I’d like to know\u2026<\/td><\/tr>
I wonder\u2026<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Example sentences:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s the date today?<\/td>Can you tell me what the date today is?<\/td><\/tr>
Where did they sleep?<\/td>I don’t know where they slept.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Form:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. If the question has an auxiliary verb, exchange<\/strong> the positions<\/strong> of the auxiliary verb<\/strong> and the subject<\/strong>. You can also do the same<\/strong> in sentences with the verb to be<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example:<\/strong> When can she<\/strong> complete it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The auxiliary verb<\/strong> is \u201ccan\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cshe<\/strong>\u201d is the subject<\/strong>. Exchange their positions when adding an introduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you know when she<\/strong> can<\/strong> complete it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where are they<\/em> going?<\/td>I don’t know<\/em> where they’re<\/em> going.<\/td><\/tr>
What is she<\/em> doing?<\/td>I <\/em>wonder what she’s<\/em> doing.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

If the verb <\/strong>is the last word<\/strong> in the sentence, you cannot shorten<\/strong> the verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Incorrect: Do you know where it’s<\/strong>? Correct: Do you know where it is<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Remove “do<\/strong>“, “does<\/strong>“, and “did<\/strong>” from the question if the question<\/strong> is in the present <\/strong>or past simple<\/strong>. Change the verb ending by using the correct verb tense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did she<\/em> say<\/em>? <\/td>Did you hear what she said<\/em>?<\/td><\/tr>
What time do you go to school? <\/em><\/td>Can you tell me what time you go to school?<\/em><\/td><\/tr>
Where does he live<\/em>?<\/td>I wonder where he lives<\/em>.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

3. If no question word (where, what, why<\/strong> etc.) is used in a question, use if<\/strong> or whether<\/strong> before the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does she study there?<\/td>Do you know if<\/em> she studies there?<\/td><\/tr>
Are they going to the park? <\/td>Do you know whether <\/em>they are going to the park?<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
