Nouns may be grouped according to gender. In English, the four genders <\/strong>of nouns are masculine<\/strong>, feminine<\/strong>, common<\/strong> and neuter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Masculine nouns<\/strong> refer to words for men, boys and male animals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

father<\/td>king<\/td><\/tr>
host<\/td>duke<\/td><\/tr>

That little boy<\/em> is tired. He<\/em> is sleeping.<\/td><\/tr>
The king<\/em> gives the order. His<\/em> soldier must follow.<\/td><\/tr>
Her father<\/em> is a hard worker. He<\/em> goes home late everyday.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Feminine nouns <\/strong>refer to words for women, girls and female animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

mother<\/td>queen<\/td><\/tr>
hostess<\/td>duchess<\/td><\/tr>
tigress<\/td>lioness<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

That girl<\/em> is very smart. She<\/em> answers the questions well.<\/td><\/tr>
The actress<\/em> is very popular. She<\/em> has many fans.<\/td><\/tr>
The hostess<\/em> is very helpful. She<\/em> takes good care of the guests.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Common nouns<\/strong> refer to words for members of a class that do not have a specific gender. They can be used for both males and females.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

friend<\/td>doctor<\/td><\/tr>
student<\/td>spouse<\/td><\/tr>

Maria is my cousin<\/em>. She<\/em> is a teacher<\/em>.<\/td><\/tr>
Vicente is my friend<\/em>. He<\/em> is a doctor<\/em>.<\/td><\/tr>
Carlos is my neighbor. He is a student<\/em>.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

To make it clear, we can add the words male<\/strong> or female before these common nouns<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is not my girlfriend, she is just a female<\/em> friend<\/strong>.<\/td><\/tr>
Vicente is a male<\/em> doctor<\/strong>.<\/td><\/tr>
She has five female<\/em> cousins<\/strong>.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Neuter nouns<\/strong> refer to words for things that have no gender. They are neither male nor female.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
