{"id":26611,"date":"2023-09-08T16:51:36","date_gmt":"2023-09-08T14:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phoneenglish.es\/blog\/?p=26611"},"modified":"2023-09-11T06:47:53","modified_gmt":"2023-09-11T04:47:53","slug":"ellipsis-clauses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/phoneenglish.es\/blog\/2023\/09\/ellipsis-clauses\/","title":{"rendered":"Ellipsis Clauses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Ellipsis<\/strong> in English grammar is when words have been <strong>intentionally left out<\/strong> to make the sentences more concise instead of having wordy sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the omission of words, the use of ellipsis <strong>should not affect<\/strong> the <strong>completeness<\/strong> and <strong>correctness<\/strong> of the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>A: Are you joining the meeting later? B: [<em>I&#8217;m<\/em>] not sure.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>[<em>Have you<\/em>] Seen your friend lately?<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>The young lady [<em>who was<\/em>] performing onstage won the prize last year.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Two Types of Ellipsis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Situational Ellipsis<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of ellipsis is mostly used in <strong>speaking<\/strong> in<strong> informal conversation<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We <strong>exclude<\/strong> grammatical words like <strong><em>articles, pronouns, prepositions<\/em><\/strong>, and to <strong>shorten responses<\/strong> to questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>A: [<em>Is<\/em>] She coming? B: [<em>I<\/em>] hope so.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>A: How are you doing? B: [<em>I<\/em>] Couldn&#8217;t be better.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>A: When [<em>are<\/em>] you leaving? B: [<em>I&#8217;m leaving<\/em>] Next week.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>[<em>Care for some]<\/em> coffee?<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>[<em>It&#8217;s a<\/em>] Shame you have to go now.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>Textual Ellipsis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of ellipsis is used in both <strong>speaking<\/strong> and <strong>writing<\/strong>. This choice of omission takes place since we can easily understand the context from the surrounding text. It is also more related to specific <strong>grammar rules<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a. <strong>After &#8220;and&#8221; and &#8220;but&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In coordinated clauses joined together by &#8216;<strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong>&#8216;, &#8216;<em><strong>but<\/strong><\/em>\u2019 and <em><strong>\u2018or<\/strong><\/em>\u2019, some words in the latter clause are often omitted since they have been brought up in the first clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>I went to the gym and then [<em>I went<\/em>] to the supermarket.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>I asked for three thousand euros monthly salary, but they only offered me two [<em>thousand euros<\/em>].<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Alex finished the race at 28.5 seconds and John [<em>finished the race<\/em>] at 32.75 [<em>seconds<\/em>].<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>b. <strong>Adverbial and Relative Clauses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reduce adverbial clauses, textual ellipsis is also used. This is done by <strong>discarding<\/strong> the <strong>subject<\/strong> and the <strong>auxiliary verb<\/strong> after the <strong>conjunctions<\/strong> <strong><em>while, when, after, before<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>When [<em>you are<\/em>] interrupting the speaker, you should at least be brief and straightforward.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>She was doing the laundry while [<em>she was<\/em>] watching the TV series.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To reduce relative clauses, sometimes the <strong>relative pronoun<\/strong> and <strong>auxiliary<\/strong> <strong>verb &#8216;be&#8217;<\/strong> are <strong>discarded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>The defendant [<em>who was<\/em>] indicted is a very influential man.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>The property [<em>which was<\/em>] foreclosed was built in the 80&#8217;s.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ellipsis in English grammar is when words have been intentionally left out to make the sentences more concise instead of having wordy sentences.
