Ellipsis<\/strong> in English grammar is when words have been intentionally left out<\/strong> to make the sentences more concise instead of having wordy sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the omission of words, the use of ellipsis should not affect<\/strong> the completeness<\/strong> and correctness<\/strong> of the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A: Are you joining the meeting later? B: [I’m<\/em>] not sure.<\/td><\/tr>
[Have you<\/em>] Seen your friend lately?<\/td><\/tr>
The young lady [who was<\/em>] performing onstage won the prize last year.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Two Types of Ellipsis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Situational Ellipsis<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    This type of ellipsis is mostly used in speaking<\/strong> in informal conversation<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We exclude<\/strong> grammatical words like articles, pronouns, prepositions<\/em><\/strong>, and to shorten responses<\/strong> to questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A: [Is<\/em>] She coming? B: [I<\/em>] hope so.<\/td><\/tr>
    A: How are you doing? B: [I<\/em>] Couldn’t be better.<\/td><\/tr>
    A: When [are<\/em>] you leaving? B: [I’m leaving<\/em>] Next week.<\/td><\/tr>
    [Care for some]<\/em> coffee?<\/td><\/tr>
    [It’s a<\/em>] Shame you have to go now.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    2. Textual Ellipsis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This type of ellipsis is used in both speaking<\/strong> and writing<\/strong>. This choice of omission takes place since we can easily understand the context from the surrounding text. It is also more related to specific grammar rules<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    a. After “and” and “but”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In coordinated clauses joined together by ‘and<\/em><\/strong>‘, ‘but<\/strong><\/em>\u2019 and \u2018or<\/strong><\/em>\u2019, some words in the latter clause are often omitted since they have been brought up in the first clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I went to the gym and then [I went<\/em>] to the supermarket.<\/td><\/tr>
    I asked for three thousand euros monthly salary, but they only offered me two [thousand euros<\/em>].<\/td><\/tr>
    Alex finished the race at 28.5 seconds and John [finished the race<\/em>] at 32.75 [seconds<\/em>].<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    b. Adverbial and Relative Clauses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To reduce adverbial clauses, textual ellipsis is also used. This is done by discarding<\/strong> the subject<\/strong> and the auxiliary verb<\/strong> after the conjunctions<\/strong> while, when, after, before<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When [you are<\/em>] interrupting the speaker, you should at least be brief and straightforward.<\/td><\/tr>
    She was doing the laundry while [she was<\/em>] watching the TV series.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    To reduce relative clauses, sometimes the relative pronoun<\/strong> and auxiliary<\/strong> verb ‘be’<\/strong> are discarded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The defendant [who was<\/em>] indicted is a very influential man.<\/td><\/tr>
    The property [which was<\/em>] foreclosed was built in the 80’s.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
