We use capital letters for the first word<\/strong> of a sentence<\/strong> and for a proper<\/strong> noun<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rules<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Names of countries, cities, streets, planets, religions, companies<\/em><\/strong> are all proper nouns so you have to capitalise them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The E<\/strong>arth has only one moon.<\/td><\/tr>
I live at 123 B<\/strong>irmingham S<\/strong>treet.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

2. Do not<\/strong> capitalise seasons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children don\u2019t go to school in s<\/strong>ummer. They return in September.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

3. Capitalise words that come from the names of places such as nationalities, languages<\/em><\/strong> and adjectives<\/em><\/strong> that refer to the people or things<\/em><\/strong> from a particular place<\/strong><\/em>. Adjectives <\/strong>and nouns<\/strong> that come from the names of religions<\/strong> must be capitalised as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christmas is a special holiday for C<\/strong>atholics.<\/td><\/tr>

4. The most important words<\/strong> in film<\/strong>, music<\/strong> and book titles<\/strong> are capitalised. A person’s job title<\/strong> is also capitalised only when it is used before the name <\/strong>of the person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
