How Much<\/strong>, How Many<\/strong>, and Very<\/strong> are used to describe quantity and intensity, but the way they are used depends on the type of word they modify. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Much vs. How Many<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The choice between “how much<\/strong>” and “how many<\/strong>” depends on whether the noun is countable<\/strong> or uncountable<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Many <\/strong>is used for plural countable nouns<\/strong> or things you can count individually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How many sandwiches<\/strong> can you eat?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How many children<\/strong> are dancing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Much <\/strong>is used for uncountable nouns <\/strong>or mass nouns or abstract concepts that cannot be counted. We may also use “how much” to ask for the price of something, even if the item is countable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very<\/strong> is an adverb used to intensify an adjective<\/strong> or another adverb<\/strong>. It does not modify nouns directly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The water is very<\/strong> clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She talks very<\/strong> fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comparison with Much\/Many<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very Many <\/strong>can be used before countable nouns to emphasize a large number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are very many<\/strong> trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The village has very many<\/strong> residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very Much <\/strong>is used for emphasis with verbs or uncountable nouns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She liked it very much<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is very much<\/strong> snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formal vs. Informal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In casual speech, “a lot of” is often used instead of “very many” or “very much”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
