The verb “to be”<\/strong> is the most important and widely used verb in the English language. It is used to describe a state of being, identity, or existence instead of a physical action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CONJUGATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When using \u201cto be<\/strong>\u201d, the verb changes form based on the subject and the tense of the sentence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linking Verb<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo be<\/strong>\u201d can be used to describe (adjective) or identify (noun) the Subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Identity<\/td>He is<\/strong> a banker.<\/td><\/tr>
Feeling<\/td>They are<\/strong> angry.<\/td><\/tr>
Location<\/td>The train station is<\/strong> on your left.<\/td><\/tr>
Age<\/td>I am<\/strong> 23 years old.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Helping Verb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo be<\/strong>\u201d is used to make tenses or voices more complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continuous Tenses<\/td>We are<\/strong> playing basketball. (Talks about an ongoing action)<\/td><\/tr>
Passive Voice<\/td>The building was<\/strong> constructed by this company. (Focuses on the object)<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

SENTENCE STRUCTURES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Negative<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Add “not<\/span><\/strong>” immediately after the \u201cto be<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am not<\/span><\/strong> sad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are not<\/span><\/strong> here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put \u201cto be<\/strong>\u201d before the subject<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are ready. \u2192 Are<\/strong> you<\/span> ready?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is a teacher. \u2192 Is <\/strong>she<\/span> a teacher?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contraction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In informal speech, “to be<\/strong>” is often contracted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am honest. \u2192 I\u2019m<\/span> <\/strong>honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is American. \u2192 She\u2019s<\/span> <\/strong>American.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Typical Errors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Remember to use are<\/em><\/strong> with \u201cto be<\/strong>\u201d for the third person plural form.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The results <\/em>are<\/em><\/strong> not what she expected.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Not: The results is<\/s><\/strong> not what she expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. We use there is<\/em> + singular noun and there are<\/em> + plural noun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There are<\/em><\/strong> so many nice <\/em>dresses<\/em><\/strong> in this shop.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Not: There is<\/s><\/strong> so many nice dresses in this shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    3. We use auxiliary \u201cdo<\/strong>\u201d, not auxiliary \u201cto be<\/strong>\u201d, for questions with main verbs in the present simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Do<\/em><\/strong> you <\/em>eat<\/em><\/strong> seafood?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
