Time and Place Subordinating Conjunctions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Time and place subordinating conjunctions are words that connect a dependent clause to a main clause.
They show when<\/strong> something happens or where<\/strong> something happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A subordinating conjunction makes one clause dependent. It cannot stand alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Common Time Conjunctions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These show when<\/em> something happens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • After:\u00a0“We went for ice cream\u00a0after\u00a0we finished dinner”.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Before:\u00a0“Wash your hands\u00a0before\u00a0you eat”.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • When:\u00a0“I was sleeping\u00a0when\u00a0the phone rang”.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • While:\u00a0“She sang\u00a0while\u00a0she was walking”.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Until\/Till:\u00a0“I will wait\u00a0until\u00a0you arrive”.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Since:\u00a0“I have been here\u00a0since\u00a08:00 AM”.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • As soon as\/Once:\u00a0“As soon as\u00a0the sun sets, we will start the fire”.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Whenever:\u00a0“She smiles\u00a0whenever\u00a0she sees him”.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • By the time:\u00a0“By the time\u00a0we arrived, the movie had ended”.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Common Place Conjunctions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    These show where<\/em> something happens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Where<\/strong>:\u00a0“He hid\u00a0where<\/strong>\u00a0no one could find him.”<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Wherever<\/strong>:\u00a0“You can sit\u00a0wherever<\/strong>\u00a0you like”.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Everywhere \/ Anywhere<\/strong>: “Everywhere<\/strong> I go, you seem to be nearby.”<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
      \n\n\n\n

      Sentence Structure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      You can place the subordinate clause at the beginning or end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      If the subordinate clause comes first, use a comma:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • When<\/strong> the class ended, we went home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Wherever<\/strong> she goes, she takes her dog.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        If it comes second, no comma is needed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • We went home when<\/strong> the class ended.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • She takes her dog wherever<\/strong> she goes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          Advanced Usage Notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          A. \u201cAs\u201d vs \u201cWhile\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \n
          • While<\/strong> = two actions happening at the same time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            Example: I listened to music while<\/strong> I studied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              \n
            • As<\/strong> = simultaneous actions, often with a sense of change or progression<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              Example: As<\/strong> I walked home, it started to rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              B. \u201cUntil\u201d vs \u201cBy the time\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                \n
              • Until<\/strong> = continuous action up to a point<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                Example: I waited until<\/strong> she arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                • By the time<\/strong> = completed before another action<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                  Example: By the time<\/strong> she arrived, I had left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Incorrect: I will call you when I will<\/s> arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Correct: I will call you when I arrive<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Incorrect: Where<\/s> I go, I will call you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Correct: Wherever<\/span> I go, I will call you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Incorrect: I\u2019ll finish the report after I will<\/s> get home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Correct: I\u2019ll finish the report after I get<\/span> home.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Incorrect: I have lived here since five years. (Duration)
                  Correct: I have lived here since 2019<\/span>. (Point in time)<\/strong>
                  Note: Use “for” for duration: “I have lived here for five years.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Incorrect: The power went out while I dropped my phone. (Dropping is instantaneous)
                  Correct: The power went out when<\/span> I dropped my phone.
                  Correct: The power went out while<\/span> I was cooking dinner. (Cooking is a duration)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Incorrect: That was the year where I graduated.
