B2 – Upper Intermediate<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Question Forms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Question forms<\/strong> are primarily built using inversion, where you switch the order of the subject and the auxiliary verb. While there are many ways to ask something, most fall into a few key grammatical categories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes\/No Questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These are “closed” questions that require a simple “yes” or “no” answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Structure:<\/strong>\u00a0Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Are you hungry?<\/em>\u00a0(using the verb “be”)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Do you like coffee?<\/em>\u00a0(using “do” for simple present)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Can you swim?<\/em>\u00a0(using a modal verb)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Wh- Questions (Open Questions)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    These use “question words” to ask for specific information. A common formula to remember the order is QUASM<\/strong>: QU<\/strong>estion word, A<\/strong>uxiliary, S<\/strong>ubject, M<\/strong>ain verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Question Words:<\/strong>\u00a0Who (people), What (things), Where (place), When (time), Why (reason), and How (manner).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Example:\u00a0Where do you live?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Subject vs. Object Questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Object Questions<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Ask about the receiver of an action. They use the standard auxiliary inversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Example:\u00a0What did you eat?<\/em>\u00a0(Answer: I ate\u00a0an apple<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Subject Questions<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Ask about the person or thing doing the action. These do\u00a0not<\/strong>\u00a0use an auxiliary verb (like\u00a0do\/did<\/em>) or inversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Example:\u00a0Who ate the apple?<\/em>\u00a0(Answer:\u00a0John<\/strong>\u00a0ate the apple.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Question Tags<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    These are short questions added to the end of a statement to check for agreement or confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Rule:<\/strong>\u00a0If the statement is positive, the tag is negative (and vice versa).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Example:\u00a0It’s a nice day, isn’t it?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Indirect Questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    These are more polite ways to ask questions, often starting with phrases like “Can you tell me…”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Rule:<\/strong>\u00a0Unlike direct questions, they use\u00a0statement word order<\/strong>\u00a0(Subject + Verb).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Example:\u00a0Could you tell me where the station is?<\/em>\u00a0(Direct:\u00a0Where is the station?<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Common Errors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Incorrect: I wonder where is he.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Correct: I wonder where he is.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Incorrect: Who did break this? (unless emphasizing)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Correct: Who broke this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Incorrect: How come did she leave?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
