While there are many ways to ask something, most fall into a few key grammatical categories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Yes\/No Questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are &#8220;closed&#8221; questions that require a simple &#8220;yes&#8221; or &#8220;no&#8221; answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Structure:<\/strong>\u00a0Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Are you hungry?<\/em>\u00a0(using the verb &#8220;be&#8221;)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Do you like coffee?<\/em>\u00a0(using &#8220;do&#8221; for simple present)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Can you swim?<\/em>\u00a0(using a modal verb)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wh- Questions (Open Questions)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These use &#8220;question words&#8221; to ask for specific information. A common formula to remember the order is&nbsp;<strong>QUASM<\/strong>:&nbsp;<strong>QU<\/strong>estion word,&nbsp;<strong>A<\/strong>uxiliary,&nbsp;<strong>S<\/strong>ubject,&nbsp;<strong>M<\/strong>ain verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Question Words:<\/strong>\u00a0Who (people), What (things), Where (place), When (time), Why (reason), and How (manner).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:\u00a0<em>Where do you live?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Subject vs. Object Questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Object Questions<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask about the receiver of an action. They use the standard auxiliary inversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:\u00a0<em>What did you eat?<\/em>\u00a0(Answer: I ate\u00a0<strong>an apple<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Subject Questions<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask about the person or thing doing the action. These do\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0use an auxiliary verb (like\u00a0<em>do\/did<\/em>) or inversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:\u00a0<em>Who ate the apple?<\/em>\u00a0(Answer:\u00a0<strong>John<\/strong>\u00a0ate the apple.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Question Tags<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are short questions added to the end of a statement to check for agreement or confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rule:<\/strong>\u00a0If the statement is positive, the tag is negative (and vice versa).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:\u00a0<em>It&#8217;s a nice day, isn&#8217;t it?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Indirect Questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are more polite ways to ask questions, often starting with phrases like &#8220;Can you tell me&#8230;&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rule:<\/strong>\u00a0Unlike direct questions, they use\u00a0<strong>statement word order<\/strong>\u00a0(Subject + Verb).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example:\u00a0<em>Could you tell me where the station is?<\/em>\u00a0(Direct:\u00a0<em>Where is the station?<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Common Errors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Incorrect: I wonder where is he.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Correct: I wonder where he is.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incorrect: Who did break this?&nbsp;(unless emphasizing)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Correct: Who broke this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incorrect: How come did she leave?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Correct:&nbsp;How come she left?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>B2 &#8211; Upper Intermediate Question Forms Question forms&nbsp;are primarily built using inversion, where you switch the order of the subject and the auxiliary verb.
