They consist of a\u00a0<strong>verb\u00a0<\/strong>and a\u00a0<strong>particle<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>find + out \u00a0(to discover)<br \/>\n&gt;&gt;\u00a0The police found out the hiding place of the criminal. (Often this gives the verb a\u00a0<strong>new meaning<\/strong>.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>take + after (to resemble ; to look like)<br \/>\n&gt;&gt;\u00a0She takes after her mother.<\/li>\n<li>count + on (to rely on; trust ; depend on)<br \/>\n&gt;&gt; I can \u00a0always count on my best friend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some\u00a0<strong>transitive\u00a0<\/strong>two part verbs have\u00a0<strong>only one\u00a0<\/strong>pattern:<\/p>\n<p><strong>N (subject) + V + p + N (object)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>[Note: N = noun; V = verb; p = particle]<\/em><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>N (Subject)<\/td>\n<td>\u00a0Verb<\/td>\n<td>Particle<\/td>\n<td>\u00a0N (Object)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>She<br \/>\nI<br \/>\nMy cousin<\/td>\n<td>turned<br \/>\ncan count<br \/>\ncomes<\/td>\n<td>on<br \/>\non<br \/>\nfrom<\/td>\n<td>the lights<br \/>\nyou<br \/>\nCanada<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Some transitive two part verbs are\u00a0<strong>phrasal verbs<\/strong>. Phrasal verbs have\u00a0<strong>two different patterns<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The usual pattern is:\u00a0<strong>N + V + N + p<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>N (Subject)<\/td>\n<td>Verb<\/td>\n<td>(N) Object<\/td>\n<td>Particle<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>She<br \/>\nHe<br \/>\nWe<\/td>\n<td>gave<br \/>\nput<br \/>\nwill be throwing<\/td>\n<td>the money<br \/>\nhis toys<br \/>\nthe trash<\/td>\n<td>back<br \/>\naway<br \/>\naway<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<ul>\n<li>But sometimes these verbs have the pattern:\u00a0<strong>N (subject) + V + p + N (object)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>N (Subject)<\/td>\n<td>Verb<\/td>\n<td>Particle<\/td>\n<td>N (Object)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>She<br \/>\nHe<br \/>\nWe<\/td>\n<td>put<br \/>\nbrought<br \/>\nput<\/td>\n<td>off<br \/>\nup<br \/>\non<\/td>\n<td>the party<br \/>\nhis children<br \/>\nour coats<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>When the object is a\u00a0<strong>personal pronoun<\/strong>, these verbs always have the pattern:<\/p>\n<p><strong>N + V +N + p:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">She gave back it<\/span><br \/>\n&gt;&gt; She gave it back<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">He knocked over it<\/span><br \/>\n&gt;&gt; knocked it over<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">We will be leaving behind them<\/span><br \/>\n&gt;&gt; We will be leaving them behind<\/li>\n<li>Phrasal verbs are nearly always made up of a\u00a0<strong>transitive verb\u00a0<\/strong>and a\u00a0<strong>particle<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Common verbs\u00a0<\/strong>with their most frequent particles are:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>bring:<\/td>\n<td>about, along, back, forward, in, off, out, round, up<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>call:<\/td>\n<td>off, up<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>cut:<\/td>\n<td>back, down, off, out, up<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>give:<\/td>\n<td>away, back, off<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>knock:<\/td>\n<td>down, out, over<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>leave:<\/td>\n<td>behind, out<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>put:<\/td>\n<td>across, away, down, forward, off, on, out, through, together, up<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>set:<\/td>\n<td>apart, aside, back, down<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>take:<\/td>\n<td>apart, away, back, down, in, on, up, over<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>think:<\/td>\n<td>over, through, up<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Phrasal Verbs Some verbs are\u00a0two part\u00a0verbs .
