We use\u00a0Wish\u00a0<\/strong>and \u2018If only<\/strong>\u2019\u00a0when we\u00a0talk about regrets \u2013 these are the things that we would like to change about the past or the present.<\/p>\n

Usage:<\/strong><\/span>
\nThere are three types of\u00a0\u00a0I wish \/ if only<\/strong>\u00a0 sentences:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Wish<\/em> – wanting to change\u00a0something about the present or future with the simple past.<\/li>\n
  2. Regret<\/em>\u00a0– used with the past perfect.<\/li>\n
  3. Complaints<\/em>\u00a0– used with would + verb.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Examples:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

    In expressing a wish:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • If only I\u00a0knew<\/strong>\u00a0how to use a smartphone.<\/li>\n
    • I wish I\u00a0were<\/strong>\u00a0a millionaire!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      In expressing regret:<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      • If only I\u00a0had gotten<\/strong>\u00a0to work early.<\/li>\n
      • I wish I hadn\u2019t eaten<\/strong> all that candy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        In expressing a complain:<\/span><\/p>\n

        • I wish you wouldn\u2019t borrow my\u00a0stuff without asking first.<\/li>\n
        • I wish you\u2019d give up smoking soon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
