{"id":7664,"date":"2018-01-22T15:02:11","date_gmt":"2018-01-22T14:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phoneenglish.es\/blog\/?p=7664"},"modified":"2021-10-11T09:27:05","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T07:27:05","slug":"verb-ing-infinitive-like","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/phoneenglish.es\/blog\/2018\/01\/verb-ing-infinitive-like\/","title":{"rendered":"Verb + -ing \/ Infinitive: LIKE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Full infinitive: to + verb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Uses:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To express purpose<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Example:\u00a0 I eat to gain weight.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>After the words: would + love\/like\/prefer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Example: I would love to go skiing with you.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>After adjectives (angry, glad, happy, sorry, pleased, annoyed, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Example: I am pleased to see you.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>With too or enough<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>He is too old to drive.<\/p>\n<p>She is too young to stay home alone.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Repeated actions (like to +verb)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Example: I like to wash dishes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verb-ing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Uses:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Noun<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Example: Walking is a good exercise.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>After the verbs ; <strong>love, like, hate, enjoy, dislike<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Example: I like washing dishes.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>After the verbs <strong>start, begin, finish, stop<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Example: You should start saving money for the trip.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>After the verb &#8220;go&#8221; for physical activities<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Example: Erin goes skiing on Sunday.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>After certain verbs; admit; deny, mind, prefer, regret, risk, suggest<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Example: I admit making a mistake of firing him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Like to + verb VS like + verb-ing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Both can be used for repeated actions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I like sewing baby clothes.<\/p>\n<p>I like to sew baby clothes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t like being kept waiting.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t like to be kept waiting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Remember:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We use verb-ing when we talk about actions that already exist or existed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I like being a mother. (I am a mother and I like it.)<\/li>\n<li>Do you like living in Dusseldorf? (You live in Dusseldorf. Do you like it?)<\/li>\n<li>The company I worked for was terrific. I liked working there. ( I worked there and I liked it.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 There is a difference between like to + verb and like + verb-ing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: I like doing something. = (I do it and I enjoy it.)<\/p>\n<p>Example: I like training new employees. ( I enjoy it.)<\/p>\n<p>I like giving presentations. (I enjoy giving presentations.)<\/p>\n<p>B: I like to do something. = ( I think it is a good thing to do but I don\u2019t necessarily enjoy it. )<\/p>\n<p>Examples: I like to throw the trash on Fridays. (It is not a task I enjoy but I throw the trash on Fridays.)<\/p>\n<p>I like to send my reports on schedule.
