{"id":7723,"date":"2018-01-29T16:01:38","date_gmt":"2018-01-29T15:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phoneenglish.es\/blog\/?p=7723"},"modified":"2021-10-11T09:27:05","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T07:27:05","slug":"modals-can-and-could","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/phoneenglish.es\/blog\/2018\/01\/modals-can-and-could\/","title":{"rendered":"Modals: Can and Could"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>CAN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Used to say that something is possible or allowed<\/p>\n<p><em>Example:<\/em><br \/>\nI <strong>can<\/strong> meet you later if you want.<br \/>\nI <strong>can<\/strong> go out this weekend as long as I finish my housework.<\/p>\n<p>-Used to say that someone has the ability to do something<\/p>\n<p><em>Example:<\/em><br \/>\nHe <strong>can<\/strong> speak seven languages.<br \/>\nShe<strong> can<\/strong> solve math problems in 30 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>The negative form of CAN is CAN NOT (contraction: can&#8217;t).<\/p>\n<p><em>Example:<\/em><br \/>\nI\u2019m afraid I <strong>can\u2019t<\/strong> go to the theater with you on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>-You use CAN\u2019T to say that you believe something is not possible<\/p>\n<p><em>Example:<\/em><br \/>\nYou\u2019ve just had dinner. You <strong>can\u2019t<\/strong> be hungry already.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>COULD\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Sometimes could is the past tense of CAN<\/p>\n<p>We use could especially with:<br \/>\nHear, smell, taste, feel, see, understand,remember<\/p>\n<p><em>Example:<\/em><br \/>\nAs soon as I got in my room, I <strong>could<\/strong> smell the burning air conditioner.<\/p>\n<p>-Is also used to say that somebody had the general ability to do something<\/p>\n<p><em>Example:<\/em><br \/>\nShe <strong>could<\/strong> dance well when she was in her teens.<\/p>\n<p>-Is also used to say someone had permission to do something<\/p>\n<p><em>Example:<\/em><br \/>\nWe <strong>could<\/strong> go out at night. My grandparents weren\u2019t too strict with us.<\/p>\n<p>The negative form of could is COULD NOT (contraction: COULDN\u2019T).<\/p>\n<p>-Used to talk about possible actions NOW or in the future (especially to give suggestions)<\/p>\n<p><em>Example:<\/em><br \/>\nYou <strong>could<\/strong> stay in my house when you go to Paris.<\/p>\n<p>-Used for actions that are not realistic<\/p>\n<p><em>Example:<\/em><br \/>\nI am so hungry, I <strong>could<\/strong> eat a cow.<\/p>\n<p>-We also use <strong>could<\/strong> to say that something is possible now or in the future.
