{"id":7780,"date":"2018-02-05T15:48:58","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T14:48:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phoneenglish.es\/blog\/?p=7780"},"modified":"2021-10-11T09:26:37","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T07:26:37","slug":"phrasal-verbs-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/phoneenglish.es\/blog\/2018\/02\/phrasal-verbs-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Phrasal Verbs &#8211; Common"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2022 Phrasal verbs are usually formed when we pair verbs with adverbs or prepositions.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0 usually use the following to form phrasal verbs:<\/p>\n<p><em>In, off, on, by, up, down, out, away, back, round, through, about, along, over, forward<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I will <em>get off<\/em> at 7th Street.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get off<\/strong> is an example of a phrasal verb<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Sometimes a phrasal verb is followed by a preposition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong> run away + from &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Turman&#8217;s cmpany <em>ran away from<\/em> its obligation.<br \/>\n<strong>look forward + to\u00a0<\/strong><em>&#8211; <\/em>We<em> look forward to<\/em> meeting you in person.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Sometimes a phrasal verb has an object.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> pick up<\/strong> + someone \/ <strong>pick<\/strong> someone <strong>up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-She <em>picked her<\/em> son up at the airport.<br \/>\n-She <em>picked up<\/em> her son at the airport.<br \/>\n&#8211; She <em>picked him<\/em> up at the airport.<\/p>\n<p>BUT &#8211; &#8220;She <em>picked up him<\/em> at the airport.&#8221;\u00a0<strong>is WRONG.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 We often use <strong>on\/off\/out<\/strong> etc. with verbs of movement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Get on<\/em> &#8211; She has to <em>get on<\/em> the train before it leaves!<\/p>\n<p><em>Get off\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; I usually\u00a0<em>get off<\/em>\u00a0at Pearl Drive.<br \/>\n<em>Go out\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; I had to <em>go out<\/em> of the office for a bit.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 However, adding these words to verbs often changes the meaning of the phrase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>get by\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; manage to do something<\/p>\n<p>The exam was quite challenging.
