Causative verbs<\/strong> <\/em>are action words that cause another thing to happen. The verbs let, help, have, make and get are causative verbs.<\/p>\n

The following examples show the usage and purpose of causative verbs in English sentences.<\/p>\n

How To Use Causative Verbs in English<\/em><\/p>\n

LET<\/strong> = Allow something to happen<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Structure:<\/p>\n

LET + PERSON\/THING + base form of the VERB<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Examples:<\/p>\n

I don’t let<\/strong> my toddler play<\/strong> at the dining table.<\/p>\n

She doesn’t let<\/strong> us go<\/strong> on a trip alone.<\/p>\n

They won’t let<\/strong> her see<\/strong> John again.<\/p>\n

I let<\/strong> all these unfortunate events happen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Don’t let<\/strong> them get<\/strong> to you.<\/p>\n

Good to know: Let is also the past tense of let.<\/p>\n

If the aim is to express a more formal sentence, the verbs allow and permit can be used. With the use of allow and permit, we have to use to + verb:<\/p>\n

I don’t allow<\/strong> my toddler to play<\/strong> at the dining table.<\/p>\n

She doesn’t permit<\/strong> us to go<\/strong> on a trip alone.<\/p>\n

MAKE<\/strong> = Require or Force Someone To Do Something<\/p>\n

They made<\/strong> him clean<\/strong> the entire house by himself. Afterall, he was the one who made all the mess.<\/p>\n

Just the same with the use of allow and permit, we must also use to + verb<\/strong> when using the verbs force and require.<\/p>\n

The company requires<\/strong> the employees to wear<\/strong> their company ID.
\n\u201cRequire\u201d is usually used when there is a rule that has to be followed.<\/p>\n

She was forced<\/strong> to surrender<\/strong> all her valuables at knife point.
\n\u201cForce\u201d is usually used when there is coercion and a threat of violence.<\/p>\n
