A group of related words that does not have a subject and a verb functioning as a single part of speech is called a phrase<\/em>. A participial phrase<\/em><\/strong> is composed of a group of words with a participle together with all its modifiers and complements. In the following examples, a noun is modified by each of the phrases.<\/p>\n

Children studying until late at night inspire me.<\/em><\/strong><\/td>\n\n

 <\/p>\n

Customer requests unattended for a long time go to the archive folder.<\/em><\/strong><\/td>\n

The participial phrase is studying until late at night<\/em>.<\/p>\n

How to Diagram Participial Phrases<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The first step is to determine the participle and the noun it intends to modify.<\/p>\n

Then put the participle on a bent, slanted line right under the noun it intends to modify.<\/p>\n

Determine the rest of the phrases and diagram it correspondingly.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here are the step by step procedure using this example sentence:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Smelling flowers at the garden, Jane sneezed.<\/em><\/p>\n

Step 1<\/strong>: Find the participle. (smelling<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Step 2<\/strong>: Determine the noun it modifies. ( Jane)<\/em><\/p>\n

Step 3<\/strong>: Determine the rest of the phrase. ( flowers at the garden)<\/em><\/p>\n

Step 4<\/strong>: Find out what the rest of the phrase is doing.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At this stage, your grammar knowledge will be put into test.
\nIn the process of diagramming this sentence, you need to know that flowers<\/em> is a direct object<\/em> and at the garden<\/em> is a prepositional phrase<\/em>. This prepositional phrase is modifying smelling<\/em>. As a result, we diagram the prepositional phrase underneath smelling.<\/p>\n

Dangling<\/strong><\/p>\n
