It indicates <b>during the time that<\/b>\u00a0and shows the action is or was happening when the other action occurred:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>The phone rang\u00a0<b>when \/ while<\/b>\u00a0she was doing the laundry.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><b>When \/ While<\/b>\u00a0she was doing the laundry, the phone rang.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Similarly,\u00a0<strong>as and whilst<\/strong> are used in the same way. As and whilst&#8217;s tone is rather more formal or literary.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>As<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0the car drove away, I watched him leave.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>I watched him leave\u00a0<b>whilst<\/b>\u00a0the car drove away.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>D<\/strong><b>uring<\/b>\u00a0is a <strong>preposition<\/strong> that introduces a longer duration. It is used with either a\u00a0<b>noun\u00a0<\/b>or a\u00a0<b>noun phrase<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>I learned how to cook paella\u00a0<b>during my stay\u00a0<\/b>to\u00a0Spain.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>I learned how to cook paella\u00a0<b>while I was staying\u00a0<\/b>in Spain.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>ONLY USE WHEN<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>When <\/b>is used and\u00a0<strong>not while<\/strong>, when trying to express that the action happens simultaneously as the longer one or the event that is referred to in the main clause:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>He was surprised <b>when Martin told\u00a0<\/b>him\u00a0he got promoted.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>He was still sleeping deeply\u00a0<b>when his alarm went off<\/b>.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Moreover,\u00a0<b>when <\/b>and\u00a0<strong>not while<\/strong> is used to express that one action happens subsequently after another and to talk about duration in the past.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>When it started raining<\/i><\/b><i>, everyone hurried home.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><b>When she was a little girl<\/b>, rainy days were very often but that was just for several weeks.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Instead of using when, we can use\u00a0<b>whenever<\/b>\u00a0to mean\u00a0<b>every time\u00a0<\/b><b>that<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>I always turn off the light\u00a0<b>when<\/b>\u00a0I leave the room.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>I always turn off the light\u00a0<b>whenever<\/b>\u00a0I leave the room.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>ONLY USE WHILE<\/h2>\n<p>We often use\u00a0<b>while<\/b>\u00a0when talking about the longer action of two events or when talking about two longer actions that occur at the same time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Martin called\u00a0<b>while Kara was at work<\/b>.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><b>While they were planning the next project<\/b>, the other team was brainstorming.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Linda cleaned the room\u00a0<b>while Margaret watered the flowers<\/b>.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Keep in mind that even though we usually use a progressive tense, it is also possible to use simple tenses to talk about longer action involving a while time clause.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, if the main and subordinate clauses have the same subject, you may leave out the<b>\u00a0subject <\/b>and <b>verb be<\/b>\u00a0in the\u00a0<b>when-\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<b>while-clause<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>When<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0(you are)<b>\u00a0studying<\/b>, be very focused.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>He bumped into an old friend\u00a0<b>while\u00a0<\/b>(he was)\u00a0<b>sightseeing in Milan<\/b>.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>USE WHILE TO SHOW CONTRASTING IDEAS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>We do not only use <strong>while<\/strong>\u00a0to introduce an adverbial time clause. It is often used more formally to connect or balance contrasting ideas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>While they are upset about the bad news<\/i><\/b><i>, they don&#8217;t want to show it.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><b>While they have been happily married so far<\/b>, there will definitely be moments when they must prepare for tough times.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the examples above, the while-clause is usually placed <b>first\u00a0<\/b>of the two contrasting ideas.<\/p>\n<h2><b>MEANWHILE MEANS &#8220;DURING THIS TIME&#8221;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Meanwhile <\/b>or\u00a0during this time, is a\u00a0<b>linking adverb<\/b>\u00a0which is used to link and contrast ideas between two sentences. It is used to express that two events are happening simultaneously:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>Prepare the marinade.\u00a0<b>Meanwhile<\/b>,\u00a0mise en place all the other ingredients.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Do your homework.\u00a0<b>Meanwhile<\/b>, I&#8217;ll prepare some snacks.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>A WHILE = A SHORT TIME<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>In cases when\u00a0<b>while<\/b>\u00a0are used as a\u00a0<b>noun<\/b>, almost always, it is used with an indefinite article:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>I haven&#8217;t read a book for\u00a0<b>a while<\/b>. What have I been doing?<br \/>\n<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i>Let&#8217;s just stay here\u00a0<b>a little while<\/b>\u00a0longer.
