Let’s have fun while practicing your pronunciation. Here is an entertaining poem that shows the absurdities of English pronunciation.<\/p>\n

I take it<\/strong> you already know<\/p>\n

Of tough<\/strong> and bough<\/strong> and cough<\/strong> and dough<\/strong><\/p>\n

Others may stumble,<\/strong> but not you<\/p>\n

On hiccough, thorough,<\/strong> laugh, and through.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And cork<\/strong> and work and card and ward<\/strong><\/p>\n

And font<\/strong> and front and word and sword<\/p>\n

Well done! And now if you wish, perhaps<\/p>\n

To learn of less familiar traps.<\/p>\n

Beware of heard, a dreadful<\/strong> word<\/p>\n

That looks like beard and sounds like bird.<\/p>\n

And dead: it\u2019s said like bed, not  bead\u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n

For goodness sakes<\/strong> don\u2019t call it deed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Watch out for meat and great and threat,<\/strong><\/p>\n

They rhyme with suite<\/strong> and straight and debt.<\/p>\n

A moth<\/strong> is not a moth in mother,<\/p>\n

Nor both in bother, broth<\/strong> in brother.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And here is not a match for there,<\/p>\n

And dear and fear for bear and pear.<\/p>\n

And then there\u2019s dose<\/strong> and rose<\/strong> and lose\u2013<\/p>\n

Just look them up\u2013and goose<\/strong> and choose,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And do and go, then thwart<\/strong> and cart.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Come, come, I\u2019ve hardly made a start!<\/p>\n

A dreadful language? Man alive<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

I\u2019d mastered it when I was five.<\/p>\n
