Discussion Questions:
1. What are some ways to learn English or a language?
I can say, through my experience learning over the years learning English, that are some ways to learn English or a language. For example, the first and the most traditional is to look for an academy to take regular classes. I think is a good way for children in order to familiarize themselves with the language but when you have been a lot of years in a common academy could be not too much efficient for the student and quite tiring. Would have other ways to learn English, for example, reading books and looking for unknown words on the internet in a dictionary, listening to English radio apps, podcasts, or programs and the last one would be watching videos, series, or films with subtitles or without them. In conclusion, I think there are different ways to learn a language it depends on the level of the student, can use different tools useful for each one.
2. In your opinion, what is the best way to do so?
As I said before, in the first years of life, as I child or if someone starts to learn a language later as a teenager or in their adult years is better to take some courses in an academy to learn basic things, such as tenses, verbs, prepositions, common words, phrasal verbs, but when the student reaches a certain level, I think can choose other ways by their own such as reading books, listening radio programs, watching T.V series and films and to take speaking classes by telephone or face to face with native teachers and also to chat with native speakers in pubs or other places having a drink, at work or traveling also.
3. What do you think of Farid’s suggestion to English learners?
I think is a good way to learn English also. Nowadays, people learn English in different ways than traditional ones could be 30 or 40 years ago in a traditional academy, and learning by themselves, watching series or films with subtitles, learning new words, new vocabulary, and making their own sentences. I practice sometimes this kind of technique and I think helping me a lot to improve my listening skills, my writing skills, to learn new vocabulary, new sentences, and obviously my speaking skills also.
4. What are things you’ve done/tried to improve your foreign language skills?
Nowadays I’m studying on my own, reading English books and journals, listening to different radio programs, apps, and podcasts, writing some articles or essays, and chatting with others in online meetings by internet also. Apart from that I support myself in some telephone English speaking classes with native English teachers that help me a lot to improve my English skills in my Speaking, improving both fluency (introducing more vocabulary and more elaborate and fluent expressions) and pronunciation, in my listening (listening different accents) and with exercises about topics previous to classes. In my writing also, doing my exercises previous to the class preparing the topic, reading an article, and answering a set of questions helped me to develop my writing skills, use my vocabulary, and new more words and meanings in each topic and each lesson.
5. What advice or tips would you give other English/foreign language learners?
Well, If their level is basic or very low, I think always could be proper to take some lessons or complete a course in a common academy or in a new academy to reach at least an appropriate level to start chatting with other people in English or in other languages, to understand quite much when someone speaks the foreign language and to be able to write at least an email, article or a letter. Once the student reaches this kind of thing, could start to watch films in English with subtitles, read English books at different levels, and listen to the radio. I think that is possible sharing do these kinds of things while the students are taking the academy course.
You are doing a good job enhancing your writing skills.
