Discussion Questions:
1. How do you define gaslighting?
It’s a form of emotional abuse. Usually, a person tries to manipulate other person basically saying to her or him that all the problems are in their head, that they are inventing things, of living an insane reality. That they are right and because of that, the “other” have problems and they are unable to realise the real things because they have mental disorder to deal with the real world.
2. Who are at risk of becoming a victim of gaslighting?
Everybody can suffer this kind of emotional abuse if they are involved in an uneven relationship, maybe with his/her partner, maybe in the job environment. At least that you have a complete self-confidence in yourselves, everyone can suffer this kind of emotional abuse.
3. Have you ever been in this situation? Were you the victim or the manipulator?
Yes, at work. Not lately but some years ago we had to deal with some kind of bosses that constantly diminished the confidence of people… I suppose because they were unable to admit that they were sometimes wrong, they blame others in a way that really harmed people that work with. Of course, it was a bullying situation but I thing also a gaslighting too. Fortunately, the Company was alerted of this kind of abusive behaviour and fought against it (i.e.: changing the reward model, changing the evaluation of the bosses to a 360º evaluation, changing the annual objectives, opening complaint channels, rewarding good behaviours, etc.) I think they got it!!
