B2 – Upper Intermediate
By definition, hierarchy is a way of organizing people, in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority. When is hierarchy bad and when is it not?
Let’s listen to know the answer and learn how chickens’ pecking order work as well.
Discussion Questions:
1. What did you learn from the chickens’ pecking order?
2. According to the audio, what is the best hierarchy? (Do you agree?)
3. When is hierarchy bad?
4. Talk about your workplace pecking order.

We can observe similarities between the human workplace and the chicken’s pecking order, that is, when everyone is equal, productivity is high, but as soon as there are hierarchies, productivity worsens because the manager interferes the work of the workers. The best hierarchy is the one that is created naturally, without impositions and the worst is the force one.
Thank you for your responses. Take a look at how you can improve expressing this particular idea:
… because the manager interferes the work of the workers.
> … because the manager interferes with the work of the employees.
… and the worst is the force one.
> … and the worst is the forced one. / … and the worst is the one that is forced.
Until your next writing! Cheers.
